Well, this went awry“, people think. „At first capitalism has made us miserable and moreover it constantly went wrong.“ „Above all“ one person says loudly „we truly have had capitalism for long enough now (that is to say 200-500 years). The time is overdue for something new, because change is necessary.“

Morning performance

Sun | 23rd November | 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Festsaal | Studierendenhaus | University campus Bockenheim

We kindly like to invite you to a late breakfast and reading from the „Jahrbücher für Extremismus und Demokratie“ as well as the performance „About: dancing in the rain“ by Gruppe 3 Berlin. The program will be framed by performances by choirs out of Frankfurt.

The most terrible things from 25 years of horror or the most horrible things from 25 years of terror

Reading from the yearbooks „Extremism and Democracy“

Since 1989 Uwe Backes and Eckhard Jesse publish the year-book „Extremism and Democracy“, now including more than 10,000 pages. At first glance, the contents of the yearbook arouse suspicion that they confirm all reservations against extremism „theory”. At second glance this impression is reinforced. At third glance it becomes certainty. This confirmation is partly surprisingly unvarnished, sometimes hidden, and sometimes pretty humorous – but principally the reading matter is horrible and terrible.

About: dancing in the rain Performance by Group 3 from Berlin

They move between lethargy, helplessness and insecurity. Temporarily even hatred against strangers and aggressiveness against themselves mingle with their actions. The spiral of capitalistic logic is fastening tighter around their neck, they feel isolated, detached, …their composure and behaviour are adopting absurd forms. They want to rebel, but do not know against what or whom, let alone how … writing poems? Pyrotechnics? Critical system design? If not for the permanent fear, fear of losing the little bit which one has been left…

In the short performance „About: dancing in the rain“ the current implications of the European crisis for the individual are examined and addressed performatively by means of various texts, pictures and other actors.

by the Frankfurter Beschwerdechor Cunningly the choir slips into the distress of the privileged, who suffer from the burden
of wealth, and with a pointed finger stings into their pimples, namely the sporting ambition to acquire and to „afford something“. This discipline should be introduced at the Olympics in the future – Here you will be presented with a vocal report for a start.

To use frustration with delight“ turns out to be the leading impulse of the singers, the choir director Phillipp Hoeler and
of pianist Helga Streb. The production of these texts and the arrangement by the group entail the voices embodying the content, so that it does not become stuck in the throat.

The filmmaker Laura Poitras was working on another movie in 2013 about the impact of the 11th of September 2001 and the ensuing war against terror, when she was contacted and received Mail from somebody with the pseudonym ‚citizenfour‘, who was claiming to have information about surveillance activities of the British and American government. As it turned out later, this person was Edward Snowden who exposed one of the greatest international data protection scandals in history, circulating secrets about the intelligence programs PRISM, Boundless Informant and Tempora. Together with Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald Poitras flew to Hongkong to receive the material and to meet the whistleblower. The recordings that have been captured by her camera are converged in the documentary Citizenfour“.

Mietrebellen. Widerstand gegen den Ausverkauf der Stadt (Rent rebells. Resistance against public sellout)

Sunday | 23rd November | 4:30 p.m. HoRsT | Kleyerstraße 15

Documentary by Gertrud Schulte Westenberg and Matthias Coers
D 2014 | 78 min. | German with English subtitles

Berlin. In recent years the capital has changed rapidly. Apartments, which hitherto have been regarded as unattractive, are now being used as safe investment opportunities. Increasing rents and countless transformations into private ownership
are becoming commonplace to a yet unknown extent. Visible housing protests are a reaction to the more and more inadequate supply of affordable living space. The movie is a kaleidoscope of the housing struggles against the expulsion from neighbourly living situations in Berlin. The occupation of the Berlin town hall, the encampment at the ‚Kottbusser Tor‘, the organized resistance against evictions and the battle by pensioners for housing housing appropriate for their age are symbolizing the new uprise of the urban protest movement.
